Tour of Ards

Having squeezed in a short ride then home for a shower and some Breakfast it was off to the Penninsula with my trusty Nikon to Photograph the Armstrong Auctions, Tour of Ards Cycle race. Around 80 top quality Cyclists started the race over an 80+ mile circuit of the County Down Peninsula on arguably the nicest days Weather of the Year to date.

My first shooting location was Greyabbey, a challenging backlit shot trying to keep the Church in my frame whilst capturing the Cyclists coming across my composition. With it being close to the start the Cyclists still had fresh legs and it surprised me just how quickly they came blasting through.

I imported the first haul of images in to my laptop as I navigated across the Peninsula to my next chosen shooting location and had only a ten minute wait until they were upon me. This time the peloton had been split in to a small breakaway group with the chasing pack about a minute further behind.

A shorter distance to my next shooting location so a bit more time to import Photographs and chill in the Spring Sunshine before the race came past me again. This time the breakaway group had extended their lead to over two minutes with a smaller group of chasers behind that and then the main Peloton.

I had a picture in my head for near the finish of the race but first one more stop to capture a few frames.

My final location and my most ambitious shot of the day, the Sun was now at its strongest and there was not much cloud cover but I wanted an image of the Cyclists heading for home with Strangford Lough in the background and the only way to capture it today was by shooting directly in to the Sun and compensating my exposure whilst hoping the lens flare would not ruin the image. I am well pleased with the shots I captured.
